Loose Lips Sink More Than Ships, (poor Nobs)
With the war going on, the Northland shipyards were busy. More workers were hired; women took over jobs traditionally held by men. Everyone felt that they were doing their part for the boys overseas. No one felt that more than Nobs, the high shift foreman. He always arrived early and stayed late. The owner values his reliability. When he didn’t show up to work, they were concerned. When a week had passed, they knew something bad had happened. Then a boy spotted something in the water: a body. Nobs had met foul play.
Who would kill him?
Rose Anthony? Rosie, or Rosie’s Been Riveted as they called her behind her back, worked the afternoon shift, and sometimes stayed late if she was needed. Workers overheard her yelling at Nobs, “You do that, and you’ll regret it! Mark my word!” Any time she checked out, she made a point of stopping in front of Nobs and staring at him. Was there something more behind this?
Was it David Dionne? It was actually the Dionne Sextuplets – just ask David. The five sisters got the notoriety; he did not. He was the forgotten brother. Trailing them as they made their appearances, David would dress as “Danielle.” He wanted the adulation! The family warned Nobs that David would not stop at anything to get attention. Workers were wondering why Nobs was so rough with a woman who showed up at the shipyard. Would there be another attempt?
Gunnar Olson? A temporary worker, Gunnar worked as a police officer during the day, and then filled in as a guard for the night shift at the shipyard. His eyesight made him ineligible, but he wanted to do something for the war. He hadn’t been there long when it was clear Nobs was not his favorite person. Workers saw him take a swing at Olson. They heard Olson say, “I had my suspicions, now I have my proof!” Nobs just laughed in his face, telling Olson no one would believe him. What was Nobs hiding?
Was it RuthAnne Barker? She never liked being known as Nobs ’little sister. Everywhere she went people would talk to her about her brother. They said he was such a hard worker – dedicated. They said he would do anything for his country. “Then you don’t know him,” RuthAnne answered. He’s not what you think he is. I know!” and she would walk away. Workers were surprised to see her coming around the shipyard. Was it more than sibling rivalry?
