Superior Wisconsin—The Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center is changing the way you experience the museum this summer.
We are offering two new tour options, this summer; The Heavy Metal Tour and See the Cool Stuff Tour.
The Heavy Metal Tour is a special summer only guided tour giving detailed information on the M-60 tank and the P-38 Lightning airplane. “When people visit the Center they are always asking for detailed information about the plane and the tank, so we decided to make it into a specialty tour.” stated Hayes Scriven, Director of the Center. “The tour has a few twists though. It is going to be led by high school students and visitors will see inside the cockpit and view other parts of the P-38 not seen on the general admission tour.”
The Heavy Metal Tour will be led by the Center’s new education program “The Bong Squadron,” a group of high school students that are being trained to give the tour. “We asked students from the area to apply and selected the ones we thought would be the best fit to give tours.” stated John Gidley, Education and Outreach Coordinator. “Each student will take a shift for two weeks and give tours, after that a new group of students will become tour guides.”
The See the Cool Stuff Tour is a behind the scenes tour of the Center’s Collection Room and the process in which items are cataloged and readied for exhibit. This tour will only be offered on the first and third Mondays of each Month. The tours will be available at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. only. At the end of each tour guests will be able to sit and visit with Center staff and discuss museum operations/collections.
In addition to these tour options, the Center is pleased to offer a joint program with Superior Public Museums and the City of Superior. If you have a Superior Library Card, you are able to check out a General Admission Pass at the Library at no charge. This pass does not cover the two new tour options.
Both of these specialty tours will begin on June 17.
